Working Illustration: David MacaulayCelebrated illustrator and author David Macaulay shares his love of knowledge and drawing in this exhibition, highlighting both published and unpublished works. Through sketchbooks, preliminary drawings and final layouts visitors learn the way he works. His works are built on in-depth research and on-site sketches, followed by dozens of drawings on tracing paper followed by finished drawings. Macaulay has produced many books including Cathedral, City, Pyramid, Castle, Mill, and The Way Things Work, as well as such picture books as Rome Antics, Shortcut, and Black and White. David Macaulay's eleborate "show-and-tells" have made him beloved by adults and children throughout the world. Time magazine once wrote, "what he draws he draws better than any other pen and ink illustrator in the world." His books have sold more than two million copies in the United States, and his work has been translated into a dozen languages. Five of his titles, Cathedral, Castle, City, Pyramid, and Mill, have been made into popular PBS television programs. Macaulay has garnered a number of awards, including the Caldecott Medal and Honor Awards. ZOOillogicals: Paintings by Chica BrunsvoldChica Brunsvold's most recent paintings, ZOOillogicals, depict a fantastic, whimsical array of beasts and fowl. The Art Party: A Celebration of 20th and 21st Century Women Artists, Prince Edward County Elementary SchoolLed by art teachers Cricket Edmonson and Joy Utzinger, elementary students have wowed crowds in the past with their mixed media installations. You've heard about their life-size, three-dimensional depictions of American Gothic by Grant Wood and a construction of Monet's garden. This year these teachers and their 1200 students were inspired by Judy Chicago's groundbreaking work The Dinner Party. Their installation in the Main Street window is called The Art Party: A Celebration of 20th and 21st Century Women Artists. This whimsical party is attended by three-dimensional, life-sized figures of famous women artists in their studio: Mary Cassatt, Elizabeth Catlett, Frida Kahlo, Louise Nevelson, Georgia O' Keeffe, and Faith Ringgold. |
