The Outdoor Art Show Celebrates 28 Years

Around Longwood, 9 a.m. - 4 p.m.

[Example of the Art]

The Art Show began 28 years ago and was so successful that four years later the Heart of Virginia Festival grew up around it. It has remained the mainstay of the Festival, drawing artists from up and down the east coast and providing high-quality art to Festival goers from throughout central Virginia.

Situated along High Street on the shaded lawns in front of the Longwood College Rotunda, the 28th Outdoor Fine Arts Show begins at 9 a.m. The works of many artists will be on exhibit for show and sale and will be professionally judged for over $2,600 in prize money. The award ceremony begins around 2 p.m.

In addition to the competition awards there will be a Merit and Purchase Award given by the Longwood Visual Arts Center. A reception for the artists, sponsored by Central Virginia Arts, will follow the show.

On the Lawn of the Weyanoke

[A Picture of Bill and Pam Gurley]

Bill & Pam Gurley, Contemporary Folk Musicians, 11 a.m. and 1 p.m.

Bill and Pam Gurley of Lancaster, Virginia, have been mainstays of the Tidewater acoustic music family for many years. Since the early seventies, the couple has performed extensively at festival and concerts, making many friends along the way. The Daily Press describes their music as "clean and polished yet rustic and natural-musical communication on a deep, honest level."

Pam's voice is known for its crystalline, warm quality. She accompanies her husband on the guitar as he switches with ease between fiddle, banjo, guitar, and mandolin. Their live performances include hot licks, solid songwriting and soaring harmonies that appeal to listeners from all walks of life.

Recently, the Gurleys celebrated the release of their first CD together, "Lights of Home." This collection of original songs and other tunes draws from Celtic, Bluegrass, and Swing influences to create a unique and enjoyable recording that is being widely and warmly received.
